Tarent is the capital city of the Italian province of the same name. The city's position is unique: the old town was built on an island between two natural water basins, separated from the open sea. A swing bridge that spans the shipping canal opened in 1481connects the old town with the new town. The entrance to the canal is overlooked by the castle, which also dates from this time and which is today used by the Marines; it is probably also the most popular postcard image of the city. But the main reason to visit Tarent is to visit the Archaeological Museum in the new town. It holds the famous golden treasures of Tarent, a unique collection of precious antique jewels.
