The naming ceremony

The celebration of the ship’s christening is the ceremony of the ship’s getting a name and a blessing. Traditionally, a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine is broken during the ritual. On smaller ships the beverage is spilt over the bug of the ship.

This tradition has been known for centuries and is still popular today symbolizing luck for the ship and the crew. The traditional speech of the godfather or godmother is often complemented by the history of the vessel.

Maiden voyage

The maiden voyage is the first voyage of a new ship carried out as a test journey. Very often the maiden voyage is celebrated with a big party in port before the ship sets sail for the first time.
