Valparaíso is one of the first cities founded by the Spanish in Chile. What is today Chile's largest sea port lies in a picturesque bay around which the city centre is built. This is where you can see historic buildings in the Victorian and neoclassical styles, huge squares and a modern port facility. The residential areas are for the most part situated on the hills surrounding the city to which the many stairways and a unique cable-car system with 16 carriages lead. It is well worth the journey uphill - the view of the harbour and the city centre is simply breathtaking. Probably the most unusual city in Chile, it is known for its interlinked houses with their traditional inner courtyards.

Callao is a suburb of Lima, the capital of Peru. Callao is the main transportation hub of South America, with one of the largest ports in this Southern Hemisphere. Lima is also the largest city in the country, in western Peru on the Pacific coast. Lima's old town, with its streets laid out like a chessboard, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The city is a mixture of Colonial-style buildings and modern architecture. The "Plaza de Armas" is the real highlight. This is where the cathedral, the presidential palace and many important churches, such as the Iglesia San Francisco, the Iglesia la Merced and the Iglesia Santo Domingo. At the corner of the Plaza is an equestrian monument honouring the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, who founded Lima in January 1535, in order to focus the reign over the conquered kingdom of the Incas here. The San Francisco monastery with its catacombs, which is close to the Plazuela San Francisco, is also worth seeing. A trip to the Plaza de Mayo, throbbing with hundreds of traders and the shopping street Calle Union are also well worth a visit. Other sights include: the Museo de la Nacion, the "Museo de Oro" and the Miraflores and Barranco districts.

Salaverry at the foot of the Andes has retained the charm of a colonial city with its old churches, colonial houses and balconies and backyards decorated with flowers. In front of the cathedral at the Plaza de Armas is a sculpture commemorating the liberation of Peru. There are many mansions that tourists can visit, such as the 'House of Emancipation', where Peru's independence from Spain was declared. From Salaverry visitors can take trips to the legendary Inca sites of Cuzco and Machu Picchu. There are many ruins dating from the time of the Incas, including the Coricancha, the second temple of the sun. Churches such as La Merced and the San Francisco Belén de los Reves monastery dating from the 17th century, as well as the Santa Clara and San Blas monasteries result in an impressive mixture of Spanish and native Indian architecture.

Manta is the most important town in the province of Manabí. The name originates from the Manta culture, which dates back to the year 500. The town has undergone a dynamic development in the fields of industry, trade and tourism. It produces primarily coffee, cocoa and tuna. Not far from the town is Montecristi, where nearly the entire population is involved in the production of Panama hats. Sights include: the museum, which exhibits mostly pre-Columbian art; the Indio market selling hand-made items.

The city of Quepos is situated at the pacific coast of Costa Rica. Through its location, Quepos is blessed with long sandy beaches and prosperous maritime flora and fauna. Beeing part of the province of Puntarenas, Quepos is an up-and-coming town. Centuries before, the town has been named after the indigenous people, the Quepo Indians. Today big game sport fishing is one of the maritime attractions. However, the city centre with numerous restaurants, bars, hotels, art galleries and shops near the beach is worth visiting as well. Another beautiful sight can be found in Manuel Antonio National Park. Enhancing ecotourism, visitors can explore the nature through various activities.

The Pacifc port of Puerto Quetzal is around 2 hours south of the capital, Guatemala City, and is named after the Quetzal bird, the heraldic symbol of this Central American country. Puerto Quetzal is the starting point for trips inland on the trail of the Mayans and into the tropical rainforest.

The Mexican harbour city Huatulco, around 50 km South of Puerto Angel, used to be nothing more than a small fishing village. Today, the town stretches more than 35 km over nine bays and a great many beaches; some of these bays can be reached only by boat. Huatulco stands at the foot of the "white mountain", "Monte Alban". Its peak was worn away more than 2,500 years ago; on the plateau that was left the Zapotecs built temples, palaces and pyramids that visitors can still visit today.

This romantic city at the Mexican Riviera with its palm-lined beaches and the almost primeval vegetation provides pure relaxation. In the North of the city there are long beaches, while the South has little coves that are just perfect for sunbathing, snorkelling and diving. Liz Taylor is a big fan and settled here because of the peaceful atmosphere and the breathtaking beauty of the landscape.

San Diego, the second-largest city in California lies at the very South of the state and is heavily influenced by Spanish, Mexican and American culture. The climate, which is warm and sunny all year round, is what makes this trendy palm-lined beach so popular. To make the most of the weather, there is a total of 112 km of beaches in the area surrounding San Diego. Mission Bay has plenty of opportunities to do some fishing, sailing, go out on a motor boat, surf or swim. In addition, San Diego is framed by a beautiful landscape with mountains and large fruit and vegetable plantations. Sights include: the old town, San Diego zoo, the exclusive suburb of La Jolla, the Maritime Museum, Balboa Park, the Museum of Art and the Science Centre.

Sunny Santa Barbara in California is where Mediterranean flair, a wonderful climate and lively beach life meet. The city's architecture in the old Spanish style is a result of the earthquake of 1925, following which the city fathers decided to rebuild Santa Barbara in the old Spanish missionary style. The city has many sights, such as the Santa Barbara Mission founded in 1786 with its pretty facade and two bell towers. In the city centre there are many historic adobe houses dating from the Spanish and Mexican colonial era. Santa Barbara County Courthouse, built in the Spanish/Moorish style and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art are also well worth seeing. There are 18 beaches where visitors can take a dip and soak up the sun while the city centre and State Street have many shops, restaurants and pavement cafés.

One of San Francisco's main attractions is the 130-year-old cable cars, which are still a popular means of transport even today. Other sights include the Fisherman's Wharf with its restaurants and views of the bay; the former high security prison of Alcatraz, which lies on an island before the city and is open to visitors; Chinatown, the largest Asian settlement outside Asia; the pagoda-topped Japan Centre; as well as Ocean Beach and North Beach. The main shopping area is located around Union Square in the town centre.
