Ravenna in the East of the Italian province of Emilia Romagna is one of the most important towns in Italy, both in historical and artistic terms. It was the last capital of the West-Roman empire, after which it was the centre of Byzantine culture in Italy. A famous location for music festivals, Ravenna has a broad range of recreational activities to offer. The bars, cafés and shops around the Piazza del Popolo and the adjacent streets are buzzing with life. This is also where visitors can find the early Christian San Vitale basilica with its famous frescoes and the tombs of Theodor the Great and Dante Alighieri, who completed "The Divine Comedy" here. The city is also famous for its Christian mosaics (a mosaic image depicting two doves). The town was once completely surrounded by a city wall; today, only the gates remain. The beautiful park is also worth a visit and in the Summer there is an outdoor cinema here.

Kotor is a picturesque little town in the bay of the same name which was founded by Greek settlers. It now belongs to the Republic of Montenegro. Despite the severe earthquake in 1979, all of the old buildings stayed standing. These buildings are also the most important sights: the 12th century Romanesque cathedral of St. Tripun with its opulent interior, St. Luka church, built in the Greek-Byzantine style, a clock tower dating from the 17th century and the fortress St. Ivan with its triple defensive wall. The maritime museum is also worth a visit.
The Bay of Kotor, "Boka Kotorska", has some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. It cuts deep into the land in the shape of a fjord and is surrounded by high mountains. Several small bays are perfect for swimming. The asymmetric fronts of the narrow streets and squares feature many precious monuments in the medieval architectural style, which helped Kotor gain its status as a World Heritage Site.

Tarent is the capital city of the Italian province of the same name. The city's position is unique: the old town was built on an island between two natural water basins, separated from the open sea. A swing bridge that spans the shipping canal opened in 1481connects the old town with the new town. The entrance to the canal is overlooked by the castle, which also dates from this time and which is today used by the Marines; it is probably also the most popular postcard image of the city. But the main reason to visit Tarent is to visit the Archaeological Museum in the new town. It holds the famous golden treasures of Tarent, a unique collection of precious antique jewels.
The Italian port lies at the foot of Mount Etna. Catania is the second-largest town in Sicily and the most important industrial centre in the region. The town on the Ionian coast is also famous for its fertile citrus gardens.
Sights include: the old town area with St. Agatha's cathedral, baroque palaces owned by the aristocracy, Ursino castle; funicular railway to Mount Etna.
The largest city in Sicily rises up from the Conca d'Oro bay (Golden Shell Bay), surrounded by glorious orange and citrus groves. It was founded in the 8th century B.C. by the Phoenicians and has been variously ruled by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Normans, the Spanish and the Bourbons, all of whom have left their mark on the city. Parlermo's historic centre is one of the largest in Europe; it has 158 churches, 55 monasteries, more than 400 stately homes and 7 theatres. Tours of the city can be organised depending on the various eras one is most interested in, but the cathedral dating from 1185 and the famous Cappella Palatina are not to be missed. Over the last few years the city has been undergoing a transition and wants a new image, to encourage culturally-interested tourists to visit. The Teatro Massimo, the former monastery of Spasimo, the Albergo delle Povere, Villa Niscemi, the Palazzo Merlo, the Chiesa di San Domenico and many other sights have now re-opened their doors for visitors following extensive restoration work.
The little town of Sorrento lies surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs in a beautiful setting above the bold white cliffs and provides a fantastic view of the Gulf of Naples. For 2,000 years, breathtaking sunsets and fragrant orange and lemon gardens have been drawing in visitors from around the world. You can follow in the footsteps of the Greeks and Romans. The small fishing port of Marina Grande, the Piazza Tasso, named after the poet Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1594), whose statue can also be seen, and the Duomo SS. Filippo e Giacomo dating from the 15th century are particularly worth seeing.
Other sights include: the Archaeological Museum Villa Fondi, the old town and Chiesa del Rosario.
The Italian capital of Rome is also often called "the eternal city", as this buzzing metropolis still has many precious treasures from ancient times, which are known around the world. The most impressive sights include the "Thermae of Caracalla", the emperor's forum, the Colosseum, the Piazza Navona, the Fountain of Neptune and of course St. Peter's Basilica, with the dome designed by Michelangelo.
