At the wide mouth of the Gambia river lies a narrow marshland peninsula. This is where Gambia's capital city was founded by the English colonial powers in 1868. The city's houses are well-kept and the viewing platform on the tallest building provides a beautiful panorama view of the entire surrounding area. In the old town you can still find old trading stations, dating back to the colonial age. The most important attraction is the "Albert Market", an interesting market and centre for tradesmen. Other sights include: the National Museum with exhibits about the country's cultural history; the major port of Banjul, where massive freight ships drop anchor.

'The capital of the Republic of Senegal has the largest port in West Africa. Its oil refineries and the international airport mean it is one of the most important trading centres in West Africa. Dakar has a population of 1.7 million and is known as the finishing point of the world famous intercontinental car rally from Paris to Dakar. Cultural and scientific highlights of the city are the university, which was founded in 1957, the research institute "Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire" (IFAN) and the museums.

Mindelo is the second-largest city on Cabo Verde and lies nestled in a beautiful bay. It is dominated by the largest and most important port in the country, "Porto Grande". Mindelo has the flair of an international port town and continues to be the cultural and intellectual centre of the archipelago. Sights include: the old town, the fish market, the reproduction of the Lisbon "Torre de Belém", which is the city's landmark.

The largest of the Canary Isles is Tenerife. Due to the mild climate and its geography, the island has a number of micro-climates. A mountain range spans the island at the centre of which is the impressive volcanic crater Cañadas del Teide with a diameter of around 20 km, and 'Teide' itself, which measures 3,718 metres in height. The valleys on either side of the mountains are extremely fertile, with important banana and tomato cultivation. By the sea there are beautiful sections of coastline with craggy cliffs and others with wide, fine sandy beaches. Active holidaymakers should visit Teide National Parks, Loro Parque, Barranco del Infierno, the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the pyramids at Güimar, the Anaga mountains, La Laguna, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and the Aqua Park.

The largest city on the Canary Isles is on Gran Canaria and has a population of 355,000 and a totally original and unique architecture. The cathedral, on which construction work began following the discovery of America, has a Gothic and Neo-classical style. It stands on the lovely square "Santa Ana", which is where the archiepiscopal palace and several other buildings in the distinctive 'Canary' style are also situated. The "Barrio de la Vegueta" area stands out due to its many manor houses, which show the influence of the Latin American colonial style. Sights include: the "Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno" which has an important collection of contemporary art.

Arrecife is the capital city of Lanzarote and has a population of around 40,000. As recently as two hundred years ago, there was only a small harbour here which belonged to the former capital, Teguise. Only during the last century did the town slowly begin to develop. Arrecife is made almost entirely of narrow, winding streets. Sights include: the "Castillo de San Gabriel" with an archaeological museum and the "Castillo de San José". The main business streets, "Calle Real" and "León y Castillo" are packed with shops and entertainment venues.

Casablanca is a modern city with a few old buildings and some elements of Moroccan culture. It was greatly influenced by French colonialism. The cityscape, consisting initially mainly of wide boulevards and French-inspired townhouses dating from the 30s and 40s, has been supplemented with new high-rise buildings and Neo-Oriental style architecture. Casablanca's attractions include the Hassan II Mosque , the arts and crafts market, "Youtiya" in the new Medina, and the Habbous district. The most important buildings in the Medina are the Jamaa el Kebir and Jamaa ech Chleuh mosques and the Sidi el Kairouani Koubba, the city's first saint.

The white city by the sea, built on seven hills and framed by the natural harbour of "Rio Tejo" was founded by the Phoenicians in around the 9th-7th century B.C.. Today it is the capital of Portugal and one of the oldest cities in Europe. Lisbon is rich in architectural monuments. The Portuguese capital also has a varied and interesting cultural scene with theatre performances, concerts and exhibitions. "Bairro Alto" (the upper city) is well known for its nightlife. Sights include: Jerónimo's Monastery, Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, Comércio Square, São Jorge castle, and "Baixa Pombalina".

Portugal's unofficial capital, Porto, is the name-giver for the entire country. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is known primarily for its famous port wine. Those who enjoy the city atmosphere will love Porto, the second-largest city in the country. The harbour is where the renowned Portuguese fleet was built. Now, there are lots of cafés and bistros here. The houses in the city are packed close together on the steep slopes, often close behind and beside one another, forming really lovely terraces. Sights incude: Praça da Liberdade, Câmara Municipal and the Soares dos Reis National Museum.

700-year-old "Villa de Bilbao" is a testament both to the past and the present. This city with a population of 300,000, has various quarters, such as the old town with the beautiful pedestrian area and the elegant Ensanche quarter. The excellent cuisine of the city, a huge range of shops and the traditional taverns, the "Txikiteos", are other attractions of the Basque capital.

Oslo, located at the end of the Oslofjord, is the capital city of Norway. Over the past few years Oslo has developed into a modern capital, encompassing more and more neighbouring towns into its urban area. There are a good 50 museums for tourists to visit; some of the most interesting of these are to be found on the 'museum island' of Bygdoy. A stroll through Vigeland Park with its obeslisks and monumental stone figures is also well worth it, as is a vist to the Holmenkollen ski-jump with a stunning view of the city and the Oslofjord. Other attractions worth a visit are the town hall, which appears a litte clumsy from the outside but boasts huge interior frescoes, the fort at Akershus at the eastern side of the port and the cathedral. Oslo has a population of 486,311. The famous Hollmenkollen ski-jump provides a fantastic view of the enchanting capital of Norway. A visit to the historic area of Oslo close to the fort of Akershus is also very enjoyable. Karl Johans Gate between the castle and the parliament with its numerous shops and cafés is the perfect place to take a lazy stroll. The port of Dover is just 28 km from France. 14 million passengers pass through here on the journey between the British Isles and the French mainland. San Juan, the capital of the Greater Antilles island of Puerto Rico, is known as the 'oldest American city'. It was from here that the expeditions set out to explore the New World. The historic old town with the university, the fort 'La Fortaleza', the gothic cathedral and the historic buildings dating from the Spanish colonial era are all well worth a visit. Since 1983, San Juan has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 'New' San Juan boasts luxurious resorts, hotels, casinos and exclusive discos, while nature lovers can explore the nearby rainforest with its mountain lakes and waterfalls.

Fort Lauderdale was originally created as a military base and has more than 270 waterways that meet at the city's yacht marina, the second-largest in the USA. This is why this port is also known as the "American Venice". Las Olas Boulevard is the centre of the city and has many shops, up-market boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. The biggest attraction in Fort Lauderdale is the white sandy beach, which stretches for many kilometres. Other sights include Stranahan House - the oldest historic building in the city, the Museum of Discovery and Science, the Riverfront Complex and the house by the river that Al Capone once called home.
