With a population of 1.1 million, Jacksonville is the largest city in northern Florida and has the largest area of any city in Continental USA. It is just a few kilometres from the Atlantic on the shores of the St. John River in northern Florida. The beautiful port was named after the president, Andrew Jackson. Although it is not well known as a German tourist destination, the city has more to offer than just about any other city in the USA and is among the top-10 places to live in America. Sights include the Fort Caroline National Memorial, the Cummer Gallery of Art, the art museum and the zoo. The city is divided in two by St. Johns River - a beautiful if somewhat eccentric river that flows from South to North - creating some very picturesque vistas. Jacksonville Landing, a kind of market place and recreational centre direct by the river with boutiques and restaurants, as well as many other first rate attractions, help encourage visitors to the city.

Horta is the capital of the Portuguese Azores Island of Faial. The city's image is dominated by beautiful old colonial buildings. Ponta Delgada is the port and the main city on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. The city, which has a population of around 30,000 is colourful and lively. The relatively small town with the historic centre is known for its pretty parks and small streets and squares. A stroll along the long waterside promenade or around the yacht marina is particularly enjoyable.

Portugal's unofficial capital, Porto, is the name-giver for the entire country. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is known primarily for its famous port wine. The white city by the sea, built on seven hills and framed by the natural harbour of "Rio Tejo" was founded by the Phoenicians in around the 9th-7th century B.C.. Today it is the capital of Portugal and one of the oldest cities in Europe. Lisbon is rich in architectural monuments. The Portuguese capital also has a varied and interesting cultural scene with theatre performances, concerts and exhibitions. "Bairro Alto" (the upper city) is well known for its nightlife.
