Valencia on the East coast of Spain was founded by the Romans and occupied in the early Middle Ages by the Moors, before being recaptured by the Christians. The largest city on the Canary Isles is on Gran Canaria and has a population of 355,000 and a totally original and unique architecture. The cathedral, on which construction work began following the discovery of America, has a Gothic and Neo-classical style. It stands on the lovely square "Santa Ana", which is where the archiepiscopal palace and several other buildings in the distinctive 'Canary' style are also situated. The "Barrio de la Vegueta" area stands out due to its many manor houses, which show the influence of the Latin American colonial style.

Recife, with a population of well over a million, got its name from the coral reefs that lie before the port and the beaches, creating unusually still waters by Brazilian standards. On account of its canals, spanned by narrow bridges and its old colonial houses, Recife is often referred to as the "Venice of Brazil". The idyllic port of Búzios is hidden away on a peninsula in the South Atlantic Ocean. This fishing village, with its South Seas flair, free of giant concrete hotels and not far from Rio de Janeiro, is considered to be Brazil's top beach resort. Despite the varied options on offer to tourists, Búzios is far from being a Brazilian version of St. Tropez. Thanks to environmental initiatives it was possible to prevent it being developed into a faceless concrete hotel-lined beachfront - houses are not permitted to be built higher than two storeys. As a result, this once-remote fishing village has been able to retain its traditional charm.

The metropolis of Rio de Janeiro lies nestled in beautiful countryside with a view of islands and paradise beaches.
