The largest city on the Canary Isles is on Gran Canaria and has a population of 355,000 and a totally original and unique architecture. Salvador da Bahia, the 'black heart of Brazil', lies on the North-East coast. In the 16th century it was the largest city in the entire southern hemisphere.
