At the foot of this mountain you can visit the baroque church Santa Maria Maggiore. The San Giusto cathedral is the town's most important symbol, while the waterside promenades are the perfect place for a stroll. Sights include: Duino castle, the huge caves, the remnants of the city wall and the Roman heart of the town, the marine aquarium, the victory lighthouse and the old stock exchange.

	Ravenna in the East of the Italian province of Emilia Romagna is one of the most important towns in Italy, both in historical and artistic terms. It was the last capital of the West-Roman empire, after which it was the centre of Byzantine culture in Italy. A famous location for music festivals, Ravenna has a broad range of recreational activities to offer. The bars, cafés and shops around the Piazza del Popolo and the adjacent streets are buzzing with life. This is also where visitors can find the early Christian San Vitale basilica with its famous frescoes and the tombs of Theodor the Great and Dante Alighieri, who completed "The Divine Comedy" here. The city is also famous for its Christian mosaics (a mosaic image depicting two doves). The town was once completely surrounded by a city wall; today, only the gates remain. The beautiful park is also worth a visit and in the Summer there is an outdoor cinema here.

	The old town of the Mediterranean port of Split on the eastern Adriatic coast in Dalmatia has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The heart of Croatia's second-largest city beats in the walls of the 1,500-year-old Diocletian palace. Even upon entering the port, Split presents itself at its best: the palm-lined waterside promenade in front of the Emperor's palace and the rooftops of the old town create a truly unique panorama. Sights include: the medieval old town, Diocletian Palace, the waterside promenade Riva, the Archaeological Museum, the Municipal Art Gallery, the Goldern Gate, the cathedral and the old town hall.

	Kotor is a picturesque little town in the bay of the same name which was founded by Greek settlers. It now belongs to the Republic of Montenegro. Despite the severe earthquake in 1979, all of the old buildings stayed standing. These buildings are also the most important sights: the 12th century Romanesque cathedral of St. Tripun with its opulent interior, St. Luka church, built in the Greek-Byzantine style, a clock tower dating from the 17th century and the fortress St. Ivan with its triple defensive wall. The maritime museum is also worth a visit. The Bay of Kotor, "Boka Kotorska", has some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. It cuts deep into the land in the shape of a fjord and is surrounded by high mountains. Several small bays are perfect for swimming. The asymmetric fronts of the narrow streets and squares feature many precious monuments in the medieval architectural style, which helped Kotor gain its status as a World Heritage Site.

	The former resort of Saranda at the Ionian Sea has become a popular meeting place, primarily for visitors from Greece. From here, one can visit the town of Butrint, where there has been a settlement since the first century B.C. and which has city walls from various epochs. The extensive excavations from ancient times include theatres, an altar to Dionysos, the Asklepius temple, nymphaeum, Roman houses and baths, early Christian basilica and an early Christian baptistry with one of the most beautiful mosaics ever found. The Lion's Gate and the Venetian fort on the former acropolis are must-sees. A ferry leaves Saranda twice daily for the island of Corfu, which is just 10 km away. But the small harbour town has wonderful beaches of its own and welcomes tourists.

	Messina is the most easterly regional capital of Sicily and lies at the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. The city was once a famous trading town at the straits and was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century B.C., then conquered by the Romans in 264 B.C., after which it experienced a history dominated by the upheaval of changing rule on account of its strategic location. Sights include: the regional museum, the Norman cathedral, Campanile bell tower with an integrated astronomical clock and the Ave Maria church.

Olbia has a small tourist harbour and a yacht club and is framed to the North and the South by many beautiful beaches. Olbia is an excellent starting point for excursions to the renowned holiday destinations on the north-eastern (Golfo Aranci) and the south-eastern coastline to the bay of "Caletta di Siniscola". Among the interesting monuments in the old town is the former cathedral of San Simplicio. Just a few kilometres from Olbia, tourists can visit the castle Castello di Pedres.

	The capital of the French island of Corsica and the "Département Corse-du-Sud" is surrounded by beautiful mountainous countryside, valleys and little villages that make it the perfect place for walks and daytrips. But this city, which has a population of 59,300, is not only a popular winter resort, but also the birthplace of Napoleon I., who was born on August 15th 1769 in a house in the Rue Saint Charles. Today, many streets, statues and monuments commemorate the city's most famous son. The town hall also has some impressive exhibits relating to the coronation of the former emperor. Sights include: the Saint-Erasme church where Napolean was christened in 1539 , also dedicated to the patron of seafarers and decorated with model ships. The Fesch Museum has a collection of works by Boticelli, Bellini und Titian -donated by Cardinal Fesch, Napoleon's uncle. Sporting activities in Ajaccio focus mainly on water sports: all year round, visitors can enjoy diving trips, jet-ski, sailing, fun-boards and angling.

	Livorno is around 20 km from Pisa. With a population of 180,000 it is the second-largest town in Tuscany. Via the "Fossi Medici" (italian meaning Medici moat), the canals of "new Venice" that connect the fort with the harbour, you come to the "Piazza Grande" with the San Francesco cathedral. Along the "Viale Italia" you can take a walk all the way to the Terrazza Mascagni, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea and the island of Gorgona which lies directly opposite. The seafront is also where you can find the municipal aquarium "Diacinto Cestoni", which is also the university's centre for marine biology.

	Cannes, which has a population of 70,000, lies on the Côte d'Azur in the South of France. Every year, in mid-May the famous film festival is held here, where all the movers and shakers come to see and be seen. Due to the many festivals, regattas, races, flower parades and countless other spectacles, this Mediterranean town is also a popular tourist destination. Barcelona is the most important economic centre in Catalonia. The cathedreal "La Seu", which dates from the 13th century, is situated in the gothic old town "Barri Gotic". But Barcelona's landmark is the "Sagrada Familia", the church designed by Antoni Gaudi. Barcelona is busy by day and lively by night. One of the other main attractions is "Las Ramblas", the splendid promenade in the city centre with countless pavement cafes, shops, restaurants, bars and discos. 	The small town of Motril has had a small sugar-cane industry since the 18th century, which is why it has also been called 'little Cuba'. It is one of the oldest settlements in Spain and was founded by the Phoenicians, then ruled for many centuries by the Arabs. The port is the most important in the province of Granada. Sights include: "Parque de los Pueblos de America", the "Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Cabeza", the Baroque town hall, and the 16th century church "Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnacion".

	The Royal Naval Dockyard, also known as King's Wharf, is on Ireland Island in the most westerly of the nine regions of Bermuda, Sandys Parish. The port facilities were operated for many years by the British as the "Gibraltar of the West". It served as the dockyard and supply station for the ships sailing between the West Indies in the Caribbean and Nova Scotia. The fort, built between 1814 and 1863 served as a base in both World Wars and was abandoned in 1951. The buildings were later given a new lease of life: today there is a Museum of Seafaring, a cinema, an arts and crafts market and the Bermuda Snorkelling Park. The beautiful beaches of Somerset Long Bay are also close by. Nowadays, the dock is a port of call for many cruise ships. Other ports in the Bermudas are St. George and Hamilton.
