South Georgia is the second-largest and most mountainous of the sub-antarctic islands. Impressive peaks standing up to 3,000 m high are part of the Andes Bend from Tierra del Fuego to the Antarctic Peninsula. South Georgia is a paradise for ornithologists: around 60 species of birds live here, approximately 30 of which also nest on the island. A visit to the historic whaling station of Grytviken and the museum is particularly interesting. The simple grave of the Polar hero Sir Ernest Shackleton is a reminder of his famous expeditions. You can see the majestic wandering albatross on a visit to the island of Prion, as well as gentoo penguins, elephant seals and fur seals. The island of Salisbury Plain has the largest breeding site for king penguins in South Georgia.

Port Stanley, the small capital of the Falkland islands with a population of approximately 2,000, lies nestled in rough moorland. It is the single-storey Victorian wooden houses and sights like the Anglican cathedral with its unique archway made of whale bones and the Falkland Island Museum that lend the town its charm.

Westpoint Island, one of the Falkland Islands, has a very bizarre landscape and lies in the South Atlantic just a few hundred sea miles from Cape Horn. The craggy coastline ends in bays and fjords that jut deep into the land. A large number of inland lakes are used for trout fishing. The island is also home to five species of penguin, as well as cormorants and albatrosses. With a little luck, you can also see dolphins, sea lions and even whales from aboard ship.
