Cape Town, (Afrikaans Kaapstad) is the seat of the South African parliament, an anglican and a catholic archbishop and the capital of the Western Cape province, as well as a cultural centre with two universities and various research institutes, museums, libraries, theatres, botanic gardens and a zoo. Cape Town is situated at the northern edge of the Cape peninsula and is one of the largest ports and one of the most important centres of industry in South Africa. The suburbs stretch around the bay by the Cape peninsula and far into wine-growing country. The oldest part of the city between Table Bay and the slopes of Table Mountain (which measures 1,086 metres in height) is also a popular holiday destination. The surrounding area is dominated by Table Mountain. A cablecar route to the summit has been in place since 1926. The historic sights include the oldest building in the city (and, indeed, the country), Castle Good Hope (1666), the Dutch Reformation Church (1699), the old town hall (1755) and the Malai district around Signal Hill. To the South of Beira Lake is Victoria Park. Colombo town centre is home to Dehiwela Zoo with animals from all around the world and a daily elephant circus.

Kochi, with a population of 600,000 is celebrated as the "Queen of the Arabian Sea". This sea port at the centre of the Malabar coast grew rich through the export of spices to Europe via the Arabian Sea. The natural harbour of Cochin was created only in the 14th Century as a result of flooding of the lagoon coastline. Expansion work began in 1929. One of the must-sees is the Kathakali dance-drama performed by the natives. Other sights include: "Mattancherry", the Dutch Palace, the synagogue, "Fort Kochi", St. Francis' Church, the Santa Cruz Basilica, the Dutch cemetery, the Chinese fishing nets, Willingdon Island and the Hill Palace Museum.

Salalah, the capital of the famous province of Dhofar, known as the land of frankincense, is a coastal town in picturesque surroundings with both historic and modern influences and bordered by tropical beaches. This is the site, for instance, of Sumhurum, the ruins of an ancient city and what is thought to have been the palace of the legendary King of Saba. Coconut palms, papaya plants, banana trees and frankincense trees line the streets, since this lively city between the mountain ranges has a tropical climate. Sights include: the gold market, the fishing villages of Mirbat and Taqa, Job's grave and the caves of Mughsail Beach.

Aqaba is the only city in Jordan located by the sea. It was once the most important port at the Red Sea and connected the region with the Middle and Far-East. For seafarers this ancient city has been the gateway to South Arabia, Egypt, India and China since time immemorial. Aqaba is famous for its pink-coloured gravestones and temples, hewn straight from the sandstone cliffs. Other sights include the 12th century fort and the region's unique underwater world.

Sights include: the ancient harbour Zea Marina, the remnants of the long walls (5th century B.C.), the Archaeological Museum with ancient shipwrecks, statues of Apollo and Athena, the Hellenic Marine Museum and the Veakio Theatre.

The little town of Sorrento lies surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs in a beautiful setting above the bold white cliffs and provides a fantastic view of the Gulf of Naples. For 2,000 years, breathtaking sunsets and fragrant orange and lemon gardens have been drawing in visitors from around the world. You can follow in the footsteps of the Greeks and Romans. The small fishing port of Marina Grande, the Piazza Tasso, named after the poet Torquato Tasso (1544 - 1594), whose statue can also be seen, and the Duomo SS. Filippo e Giacomo dating from the 15th century are particularly worth seeing. Other sights include: the Archaeological Museum Villa Fondi, the old town and Chiesa del Rosario.

The Italian capital of Rome is also often called "the eternal city", as this buzzing metropolis still has many precious treasures from ancient times, which are known around the world. The city of La Spezia, which has a population of approximately 110,000 lies nestled among the green hills of Italy. The port borders to the North onto the steep mountain ridges of "Cinque Terre" and has wonderful beaches to the South near Carrara. La Spezia is known as a modern port and industrial city with a touch of Art Nouveau charm. Palms and oleander trees are characteristic of the cityscape. The city is shaped by both tourism and the naval base located here. Sights include: the large Friday market at "Viale Garibaldi", the Museum of Shipbuilding "Museo Navale" and "Castello San Giorgio".

Even 2,000 years ago, Portofino ("Portus Delphini") was a town with resident coral fishers and was mentioned in Roman writings. In the 20th century this sleep fishing village developed into a popular holiday destination for the 'jet-set'. Today there are luxury villas atop beautiful hills and although Portofino has retained the look of a fishing village, most of the vessels moored in the harbour are luxury yachts. For nature lovers the Portofino Nature Park is a must-see.

Cannes, which has a population of 70,000, lies on the Côte d'Azur in the South of France. Every year, in mid-May the famous film festival is held here, where all the movers and shakers come to see and be seen. Another highlight is the splendid promenade, the "Boulevard de la Croisette" lined by palms and bedecked with flowers. Due to the many festivals, regattas, races, flower parades and countless other spectacles, this Mediterranean town is also a popular tourist destination. Other sights include: the Lérins islands "St. Marguerite" and "St. Honorat". The old town is atop the hill "Mont Chevalier" with a castle dating back to the time of the Crusades. This is also where you will find the museum and the pilgrimage church "Notre-Dame de l'Espérance".

The picturesque natural harbour of Mahón lies in the Mediterranean and was made island capital during the British occupation in 1722. From the main square "Placa de Esplanada" through the pedestrian zone you will reach the fish and vegetable market beneath the old cloisters of a former monastery. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the port of Mahón, English in style but with a Mediterranean feel. Sights include: the city gates "Pont de Sant Roc", built in around 1500 and which was seen as the city wall during the Middle Ages.

The capital of the Balearic Islands is the economic and cultural centre of Majorca. During the 13th and 14th century the town developed into one of the most important centres of trade in the Western Mediterranean. Trade brought the town much wealth and prestige. The majority of the historic buildings of Majorca also date from this period. In Palma both the shady splendid street of Passeig des Born and the small streets of the old town reverberate with life. For a modern city, Palma has managed to retain a particularly attractive city centre. Sights worth seeing include: the cathedral la Seu (with Gothic towers, measuring 120m long and 40m high, and fascinating rose windows – measuring 12.5m across and covering a total area of more than 100 square metres); the Palace Almudaina (former residence of the Majorcan royal family, with a beautiful garden); the stock exchange La Llotja (founded in the Middle Ages, often confused with a church due to the adornment of the building. Nowadays it is often used for exhibitions); the market hall Mercat Olivar; the monestary church of Sant Francesc (a Gothic church dating back to 1232 with impressive late Gothic cloisters).

Ibiza is the most westerly of the Spanish Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean. Together with Formentera to the South and the smaller islands in the vicinity it forms part of the Pityuses Group. Ibiza itself has a great deal to offer: sunshine, sea, beautiful sandy beaches, breathtaking scenery and the vibrant centre, Ibiza Town with its picturesque old town. Extensive parts of the island have kept their natural landscape, cultural monuments and their rural charm. The island is also an eldorado for clubbers and a mecca for fans of watersports.

Valencia on the East coast of Spain was founded by the Romans and occupied in the early Middle Ages by the Moors, before being recaptured by the Christians. The old town has many must-see buildings, such as the cathedral, built in 1262, whose clocktower is the city's landmark, or the Church of Santa Catalina. Visitors can also take a close-up look at the two well-preserved towers of the medieval city. Those looking to relax should take a trip on the modern tramway to one of Valencia's many beaches. Sights include: the cathedral, the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, the imperial monastery, San Nicolas church, San Martin church, La Lonja de la Seda, the town hall, the Mercacado Central, Mercado de Colon, Estacion del Norte, Jardines del Turia and Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.

Barcelona is the most important economic centre in Catalonia. This Mediterranean metropolis also has lots to offer in cultural terms, including, among other things, the Picasso Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Catalonia. The cathedreal "La Seu", which dates from the 13th century, is situated in the gothic old town "Barri Gotic". But Barcelona's landmark is the "Sagrada Familia", the church designed by Antoni Gaudi. Barcelona is busy by day and lively by night. One of the other main attractions is "Las Ramblas", the splendid promenade in the city centre with countless pavement cafes, shops, restaurants, bars and discos. Other must-sees include "El Puerto", the harbour with a wonderful view of Barcelona, and the nearby boulevard "Paseo de Colón".
