The city of Danzig with its 463,000 inhabitants, known in Polish as Gdansk, is one of Poland's most important port and trading cities. Before its destruction in the Second World War (at the end of March 1945), the city centre was a jewel of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Magnificent house facades and gates, the Church of St Mary from the 14th and 15 centuries and the "stumpy" tower (79 m high) and the famous Crane Gate (1443) were all seminal images of the city. The old city has subsequently been rebuilt exactly as it was and at great expense.
