Kangerlussuaq, also known by its Danish name, 'Søndre Strømfjord', lies at the end of the 170 km long Fjord of the same name in Greenland. It is home to the largest airport in the country and the starting point for exploratory and adventure expeditions. The town has been dominated by the American presence since 1941, as Kangerlussuaq was one of the most important stopovers for airforce manoeuvres during World War II. The surrounding area of this town in western Greenland is home to around 4,000 musk oxes - the largest herd living in the wild, and visitors are also likely to see reindeers.

With a population of 5,000, Sisimiut is the second-largest town in Greenland. The Greenlandic name, Sisimiut, means "foxhole inhabitant". The town has the most northerly port that remains ice-free all year. Accordingly, the fishing industry and the export of prawns are booming. The town is proud to be home to the most modern shrimp factory in the world. Sisimiut is also the first settlement North of the Arctic Circle where the Inuit kept sled dogs for use in the Winter. The museum and the old town with the oldest wooden church in Greenland, which dates from 1775, are particularly worth seeing.

Port of Spain is the port and capital of Trinidad and the joint capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The city centre between the harbour and Queen's Park Savannah can easily be explored on foot. The ideal starting point for a tour of the city is Frederick Street, one of the main shopping streets, which starts at South Quay by the harbour. This is also where visitors can see Fort San Andres, built in 1785 to protect the harbour, which today houses several administrative bodies. The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, the Jama Masija, a Friday mosque, the Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity and the National Museum are also all worth a visit.
You can enjoy a wonderful view of Port of Spain from the green hills of the hinterland. A trip to the tropical landscape of the Northern Range is also extremely worthwhile.

With 360 days of sunshine, the capital of the state of Ceará boasts the best and most settled weather in Brazil. Due to its proximity to the equator, sunshine is guaranteed even during the "Brazilian Winter" (in July and August). The sandy beach at Praia do Futuro, around 8 km South-East of Fortaleza, is perfect for sunbathing. The city's atmosphere is busy and vibrant with an excellent nightlife with jumping bars, pubs, restaurants and discos and even on the beach the party never stops all year round.
Sights: Passeio Público park, the traditional market "Mercado Central", the fish market, the legendary "Praca José de Alencar" square, the art nouveau theatre "José de Alencar", the nature and ecological park Do Coco, the fort at Nosha Senhora da Assuncoa and the cathedral.

'The capital of Rio Grande do Norte is one of the oldest cities in Brazil and today has a population of more than 600,000. The city's name can be attributed to its "birthday" - it was founded on Christmas Day 1599. Natal is a popular holiday destination on account of its endless white beaches, and the year-round Summer climate, but the main attraction are the dunes that lie both to the North and the South of the city. The dunes are very high, overlooking picturesque bays; visitors can enjoy an exhilirating ride through the sand in a beachy-buggy. The pentagonal-shaped Forte dos Reis Magos, built in the 16th century, and the Museum da Càmara Cascudo are the city's most important sights. The arts and crafts centre in the former prison is also very interesting. Each of the former cells houses a small shop selling pottery and embroideries, among other things.

Salvador da Bahia, the 'black heart of Brazil', lies on the North-East coast. In the 16th century it was the largest city in the entire southern hemisphere. Today, Salvador is a melting pot of cultures and the centre of African culture. The city at "All Saints Bay" is probably the most exotic and eccentric city in Brazil. Two thirds of the population are the descendants of African slaves. African rituals, cults and religion can thus be found at every turn. In the historic old town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, baroque buildings are a reminder of colonial rule. Lots of churches and a market for arts and crafts are also to be found in the town centre. A pure, exotic atmosphere, happy people, palm-lined beaches stretching several kilometres, music and the Afro-Brazilian culture are ever-present.

The metropolis of Rio de Janeiro lies nestled in beautiful countryside with a view of islands and paradise beaches. The city's landmarks are Copacabana beach and the Sugar Loaf Mountain, which gives the city its unmistakable silhouette. Opposite, on Corcovado hill, stands the world-famous statue of Christ. Historic churches and monuments compete with modern architecture; typical traditional street markets stand directly beside ultra-modern shopping centres. A trip in a cable car to the peak of the Sugar Loaf, which is over 700 m high, promises a truly breathtaking view of the city.
Sights include: Metropolitana Cathedral, the municipal theatre, the city palace Paco Imperial, the National Historical Museum, Sugar Loaf Mountain and the statue of Christ.

South Georgia (South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands)

|
|
South Georgia is the second-largest and most mountainous of the sub-antarctic islands. Impressive peaks standing up to 3,000 m high are part of the Andes Bend from Tierra del Fuego to the Antarctic Peninsula. South Georgia is a paradise for ornithologists: around 60 species of birds live here, approximately 30 of which also nest on the island.
