Miami is a city at the South-East coast of the US state of Florida. The "Coconut Grove" district was the heart of the settlement in 1884. Charleston is a port town in South Carolina with an important Atlantic harbour on Charleston Bay. The town has an old town that is truly unique in the USA, with original architecture dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The restored villas, formerly owned by the elite of plantation-owners and traders, are a reminder of Charleston's past as a port and meeting point for the trade in slaves and cotton. The Edmund Alston House, Victorian-style Calhoun Mansion, the ball room on Meeting Street, the Nathaniel Russell House, St. Michael's Episcopal Church and the Heyward Washington House are all worth a visit. The Dock Street Theatre, the French Huguenot Church and the US Custom House are not to be missed either. At the Market Hall, farmers sell fruit, vegetables and meat and even souvenir-hunters will find something they like here.

The prominent position of the marines in the city is documented in the Naval Museum. Directly before the city lies Virginia Beach, a popular destination for holidaymakers with its beaches and range of water sports facilities. Hampton is situated on a tongue of land opposite Norfolk. It was founded in 1610, making it the oldest permanent settlement of English origin in the USA. Visitors will also enjoy the highly interesting Virginia Air and Space Centre.

The Royal Naval Dockyard, also known as King's Wharf, is on Ireland Island in the most westerly of the nine regions of Bermuda, Sandys Parish.
The port facilities were operated for many years by the British as the "Gibraltar of the West". It served as the dockyard and supply station for the ships sailing between the West Indies in the Caribbean and Nova Scotia. The fort, built between 1814 and 1863 served as a base in both World Wars and was abandoned in 1951.
The buildings were later given a new lease of life: today there is a Museum of Seafaring, a cinema, an arts and crafts market and the Bermuda Snorkelling Park.
The beautiful beaches of Somerset Long Bay are also close by.
Nowadays, the dock is a port of call for many cruise ships. Other ports in the Bermudas are St. George and Hamilton.
