Piraeus, today a modern port town, has been Athens' port since ancient times and used to be connected with the capital by means of city walls. Only remnants of these wall remain. Piraeus has made a name for itself primarily on account of its appealing nightlife and the romantic fish restaruants by the sea. Sights include: the ancient harbour Zea Marina, the remnants of the long walls (5th century B.C.), the Archaeological Museum with ancient shipwrecks, statues of Apollo and Athena, the Hellenic Marine Museum and the Veakio Theatre.

Tips for excursions

Athens & Cape Sounion

Visit to Cape Sounion, known for its temple of Poseidon and a marvellous view of the Argolis peninsular and the Cyclades. At the coast here there is a sheer drop of 60 m into the ocean. Lunch. The trip continues towards Athens to the Acropolis. Tour of the excavations.

Trip along the Corinth Canal

A trip to the village of Isthmia. The journey continues on a traditional kaiki, a Greek fishing boat, through the Corinth Canal, built in 1881, which connects the Ionian and Aegean Seas. During the trip refreshments will be served.

The Corinth Canal, ancient Corinth and the Temple of Apollo

Excursion to Corinth. A view of the 18th-century Isthmus Canal from the vantage point of a bridge at 900 m above sea level. The trip continues to ancient Corinth with its enormous forum, surrounded by temples, theatres, thermal baths, fountains, shops and churches. Visit to the ruins of the Doric Temple of Apollo.
