Torvik is the most important port for the approximately 8,000 residents of the island in Heröyfjord. A detour to the pretty town of Alesund, which was destroyed in a fire in 1904 and rebuilt in the space of just three years in Art Nouveau style with the help of the German emperor Wilhelm II. is well worth it. Alesund is also referred to as the 'Venice of the North' and is the largest fishing port in Norway with its large fishing fleet that is active all year round.
