A historical narrow-gauge railway network, originally built for the transport of bananas over terrain once considered to be unmasterable, takes the participants into the heart of the rainforest. The trip continues to the lively banana town of Estrada. The train follows the coast, covered with hundreds of large coconut trees. A visit to a banana plantation with its floral houses built on stilts, in which you can get further insights into the role of agriculture.
Trip southwards past Cienequita, the oldest part of Puerto Limon, whose houses were built on stilts by the first Jamaican settlers. Detour to Limon International Airport. Alongside banana and cocoa plantations, an opportunity to watch white and blue egrets, kingfishers and pelicans. A break en route in one of the rainforests, home to iguanas, flycatchers, falcons and red kites. On the way back to Puerto Limon there will be an opportunity to visit the village of Bananito, built by the fruit company Dole. A trip around Moin harbour brings the excursion to an end. A quick shopping opportunity before returning to the ship.
The Puerto Vargas nature reserve is part of the Cahuita national park, which stands out due to its multiplicity of animal species such as monkeys and racoons. Various bird species, such as the green ibis, heron, and kingfishers live in the swamps, and the region is also home to four species of frog. Alongside the nature reserve, there is an opportunity to visit the Cahuita, one of the most picturesque regions of the Caribbean in Costa Rica with white sandy beaches and coral reefs. Beach and tropical rainforest offer a unique contrast.
