Taolanaro (formerly known as "Fort Dauphin") lies in the South of the island and was the first French settlement in Madagascar. Some parts of the 17th century fort are still standing. The city and the surrounding area are renowned for seafood, orchids and flesh-eating plants, which visitors can see at the agricultural Mandona Centre in Baie de Sainte-Luce. Berenty National Park, which is home to several rare species of animal, is also nearby.
