Since 1893 the „Hurtigrute“ (meaning “the Express Route”) has been connecting the south-west with the north-east of Norway. A simple mail cruise lasts six days and a half and passes the coastline of Norway between the Hanseatic city of Bergen and Kirkenes through the impressive fjord landscapes of Norway.
The new generation of Hurtigruten mail ships takes its passengers on an unforgettable trip following the routes of the traditional cargo ships, for the shipping company puts a special emphasis on cruising with a lot of comfort and best the service possible. Today the fleet of Hurtigruten represents a combination of cargo ships, passenger and cruise liners and consists of the ships „Finnmarken“, „Kong Harald“, „Lofoten“, „Midnatsol“, „Nordkapp“, „Nordlys“, „Nordnorge“, „Polarlys“, „Richard With“, „Spitsbergen“, „Trollfjord“ und „Vesterålen“.
Furthermore different expedition cruises are offered by Hurtigruten. The classic mail ships Midnatsol and Spitsbergen are deployed for expedition cruises as well. Moreover the two expedition ships “Fram” and “Nordstjernen” are part of the Hurtigruten fleet. The sector of expedition cruises will be continuously extended, in May 2019 the Roald Amundsen was added to the fleet, the Fridtjof Nansen followed in October 2019.
